Gender Reveal

One of my favorite things to do as a newborn photographer is planning gender reveals!  It’s such an exciting time.  This time, not only did I get to plan a gender reveal, but I got to plan MY gender reveal!  Baby C number 2 will be arriving any day now!  Our due date is January 22nd, less than a week and a half away.  I got so busy with everything else going on in life that I never got a chance to share our reveal with the world.  So here it is…

On father’s day, Avi and I gifted Chase a huge surprise!  He was about to become a dad of two instead of one! When he opened his gift, he saw this portrait of me and Avi (by Kristina Betterman Photography).

Surprise Announcement to Chase

Our Gender Reveal

Now to plan a gender reveal!  I wanted to involve Chase, but let’s face it, he wasn’t really into all of the pinks, blues, and cutesy party ideas I was pinning all over Pinterest.  I originally thought we would do the tannerite and colored chalk reveal where Chase could shoot it with a rifle for a nice loud explosion of powder.  However, I was seeing that gender reveal on every photography page out there.  I had to get creative.

Last year, Chase built a cannon that fires bowling balls.  Yes, bowling balls!  He has successfully shot it 1/4 of a mile as well as annihilated a junker van.  He is always looking for a reason to fire the cannon.  Perfect.  I just needed to figure out how we could use it in our reveal.  He was totally on board.  At first, we created the powder, and tried using the pressure of the bowling ball to push it out.  It worked, but it was so fast you could hardly tell what happened.  Chase decided to alter the cannon by adding a smaller inner tube that would fire golf balls instead.  He was able to pack the entire tube with the colored powder.  Success!

We invited family and friends over for a gender reveal party and everyone headed outside to see the big reveal.  Check out the video of the actual reveal party below!

Following the reveal, we set everything up again, this time during the golden hour of sunset, for the portrait session.  Please note:  this is a composite photo meaning multiple photos were composited together.  Avi was never near the cannon when it was fired!  And so there you have it…Avi is going to be a big sister any day now and we are so excited to have another sweet girl!
